Sourdough by Robin Sloan
Robin Sloan's Sourdough is an interesting tale of a computer programmer, Lois Clardy, who came to San Francisco ready to change the world. She quickly realizes, however, that she is just going through the motions and isn't really happy. This realization comes from a unique relationship she had with some brothers who ran a hole-in-the-wall restaurant and the food she fell in love with. Unfortunately the brothers had to leave the country due to visa issues. Before they leave, they leave Lois with the task of keeping their secret sourdough starter alive and encourage her to learn to bake with it.
This is a quick read but may not be for everyone because it is a little quarky. If you are looking for a quick read with a slight fantasy element (while still mainly realistic) then this book is for you.
